Device design including sophisticated electronics and mechanical packages

Chromatography Centrifuge

Bluefin developed a preparative-laboratory scale planet centrifuge with temperature control and 500- 1000 rpm centrifugation rate. Turn-key instruments for sample loads of 1 g or more for natural product separation and carbon nanotubes. It offers precise fractionation in support of analytic and separation processes. We designed and built the system to meet stringent mechanical and thermal needs.

Sample Prep Station

The team of engineers developed an automated sample preparation station for a laboratory Time of Flight mass spectrometer. The system automates sample collection which previously required up to a half hour of lab technician time. The process now takes less than three minutes and can be used by first responders to identify biological agents through analysis and identification of complex protein molecules.

Telemedicine Pill Dispenser and Patient History Tracking

Our team of engineers developed a hardware/software platform for a novel telemedicine application including pill dispensing and creation of Patient History Records that track compliance with prescriptions. This device includes electromechanical and compute systems as well as embedded and cloud software.

Surgical Simulation

Our team of engineers developed the first commercially-viable surgical simulation systems in the world. Our team of engineers developed the first commercially-viable surgical simulation systems in the world.

The team designed multiple hardware platforms which provide realistic visual and tactile training via motion control and simulation for doctors, nurses, and technicians, including the following procedures:

•Intravenousaccess and catheterization

•Bronchoscopy and upper GI endoscopy

•Colonoscopy

•Laparoscopy

•Hysteroscopy& Ureteroscopy

•Endoscopic Vein Harvesting

•Stent and Pacemaker Lead Placement

•Balloon Angioplasty

Portable Sample Prep Station

The team of engineers developed an automated sample preparation station for a portable Time of Flight mass spectrometer. The system automates sample collection which previously required up to a half hour of lab technician time. The process now takes less than three minutes and can be used by first responders to identify biological agents through analysis and identification of complex protein molecules.

Polymer Chromatography Rotors

Our team of engineers developed a family of polymer rotors that support centrifugal countercurrent chromatography in a planet centrifuge. The rotors incorporate complex internal geometries necessary for proper separation and fluid flow. Their construction is tailored for manufacture using the selective laser sintering process.

Motion Control for Training Systems

The team developed multiple generations of drive electronics for advanced motion control applications in the healthcare market. These devices included position sensing and amplification, plus user power supply circuitry for multiple voltage and current requirements.

Mass Spectrometer Packaging

This Mass Spectrometer ionizes compounds and measures the chemical composition separated according to the mass of the constituent ions.  Bluefin designed the enclosure and developed two printed-circuit board prototypes that control the operation of the sensors and actuators.
